“Oz the great and powerful” (the world not the man)

Monday, March 11, 2013

Sam Raimi goes where few filmmakers have dared to go, taking us back to Oz.  Who would be up to making a film that is in the world of one of the most beloved films in history?  Sam “Drag Me To Hell” Raimi and James “Pineapple Express” Franco are up for it.  They bring us “Oz the great and powerful.” Kansas is full of good men but Oscar “Oz” wants to be a great one.  He has a carnival magic act that is so pathetic that he can’t even get an assistant that remembers her lines.  An act that mesmerizes few and angers many.  A girl in a wheelchair...

The Dark Knight Rises: The Anti-Schumacher

Wednesday, August 1, 2012

“The Dark Knight Rises” goes places and does things the studio didn’t want it to do thus making Christopher Nolan’s third entry the least studio friendly.  The Batman films have always been more edgy than all the other superhero films.  Those of us who saw “Batman” in 1989 were blown away by Tim Burton and the brand of goth he brought to the “Batman” saga.  After “Batman and Robin”, Joel Schumacher left Batman in purgatory.  The franchise languished in hiding until Nolan brought something different with “Batman Begins.” I had seen “The Dark Knight”...

Charlize Theron Bathes “Snow White and the Huntsman” in Black

Friday, June 1, 2012

“Snow White and the Huntsman” brought us the second Snow White film of the year. While “Mirror Mirror” looked so sugarcoated I wouldn’t even see it (and I see almost everything), “Snow White and the Huntsman” always looked like it was aiming to be “The Dark Knight” of Snow White.  What the film does well, it nails to the wall and what doesn’t work causes people to snore in the theater (that’s not a metaphor either.) In the first ten minutes, Ravenna (Charlize Theron) marries the king and becomes queen. She kills the king and her reign of terror begins by locking up Snow White. ...

Nicknames, Homages, & Creepy Children: An Interview with Psych’s James Roday & Dule Hill

Psych

Tonight Psych returns to USA with ‘Indiana Shawn and the Temple of the Kinda Crappy, Rusty Old Dagger.’ I’ve seen the first episode back and it’s everything you’d expect with Psych taking on Indiana Jones. Plus it features the return of Despereaux (guest star Cary Elwes), a cameo from John Rhys-Davies and guest star Aadchen Amick! I had a chance to talk with Shawn and Gus, or at least the actors who play them James Roday and Dule Hill, about the new season, what’s in the works for next season, and more
